On July 27, 2024, a complaint was filed by residents of several villages in Buriticá, expressing their concern about the strict rules imposed by the Clan del Golfo. The community’s complaints have resurfaced, as residents report that although the pressure from this criminal group temporarily decreased, it has intensified again.

Neighbors report to Caracol Radio that the Clan del Golfo has resumed its abuses, justifying its actions as an attempt to maintain order in the area. Recently, a member of the community revealed that the self-proclaimed Colombian Gaitanista Army (EGC) fined an unfaithful couple 2 million pesos.

According to the information, a married man was having a relationship with another woman, which led the group to demand a payment of one million pesos each from both. Those who refuse to comply with this sanction face threats of physical violence, and could even be forced to leave the region.

In addition, a new regulation has been imposed that requires establishments that sell alcohol to close at 2 a.m. Previously, there were no time restrictions. Those who do not comply with this order could face fines ranging from one to five million pesos.

Residents must also ask permission from the Gulf Clan to hold any kind of celebration in their homes. Without this approval, they cannot hold events, which affects their daily lives.

Sources report that the group is recruiting community members to act as informants, offering them considerable sums of money and cell phones in exchange for information on suspicious movements, whether of individuals or authorities. There is no age distinction for this recruitment, and many of those who accept no longer wish to perform other work activities.

Although the Gulf Clan has rejected drug trafficking in some cases, it seems that they are only bothered by the fact that other people benefit from the sale of drugs. Drug outlets must be authorized by them, and those who do not comply with this rule can face fines of up to 30 million pesos, or even more serious consequences.

It should be noted that these complaints are related to recent reports from the Antioquia police, which revealed that in localities such as Ebéjico, Armenia and Heliconia, the same criminal group dictated rules on the appearance of women, including recommendations on hair color, manicures and clothing.
