That pride! In this note we tell you the story of the Guatemalan artist José Azurdiawho was selected to participate in the World Choral Music Symposium 2023which will be held in Istanbul Turkey.
This international event brings together best musicians in the worldand it is the second time in history that our country participates in said event.
The Guatemalan José Azurdia was selected to participate in the World Symposium of Choral Music 2023 in Turkey
Jose Alberto Azurdia Lamadrid it’s a Guatemalan choir director who is currently studying for a master’s degree in Choral Conducting at Georgia State University, and who was chosen to participate in a masterclass with the renowned professor Ragnar Rasmussen. This class is one of the main events that will take place during the World Choral Music Symposiumfrom April 22 to 27 of this year.
During this masterclass, attendees will focus on directing techniques and the audition to be part of it was open to directors from all over the world. Azurdia was one of the six selected worldwide to work with Rasmussen. That pride!
The artists who have been selected for the masterclass will also have the opportunity to work with the best local choirs and their masterclass will conclude with a concert.
Chapín talent shining internationally
We talked with José Azurdia, who expressed his excitement for being part of this event «I feel very excited, because I know that it is a process of a lot of learning. Very grateful for the opportunity to share and learn from the best choirs and conductors in the world. And I feel very proud to be able to show the world that in Guatemala y Latin America We really want to grow and do until high quality».
He also added that he is preparing to participate in this masterclass with his professors from Georgia State University, Deanna Joseph and Jennifer Sengin.

More regarding Jose Azurdia
His choral career began in the Victory Choir of Guatemala, with which he toured countries such as Mexico, the United States, Austria, the Czech Republic, among others. He has been a member of the choir of the Rafael Landívar Universitywith whom he has participated in numerous festivals, and in Costa Rica, he has participated as a singer of the Intermezzo Chorus with which he made two international tours to choral competitions.
As director coral founded the group Vocapella Octet, of which he is currently its musical coordinator. He was the director of the children’s, youth and adult choirs of the Pre-University Program of the National University of Costa Rica. directed the Choral Conducting Workshop IV and the Choral Conducting Workshop II from the National University of Costa Rica.
He has participated as guest conductor of the Choir of the Rafael Landívar University of Guatemala, The Chorale Cafe of Costa Rica and the chamber choir Vocalis de Guatemalaalongside Grammy Award-winning songwriter Jake Runestad.
