The number of cases of scabies is increasing in Belgium, according to the Nieuwsblad. The Dutch-speaking daily indicates that it has doubled in the space of 5 years.
As a reminder, scabies is a skin condition caused by a mite, Sarcoptes scabiei. It manifests itself by intense itching, especially at night.
The treatment, an ointment, would have lost its effectiveness. Doctors had already reported this in 2021. Two other treatments exist (ivermectin and benzyl benzoate) but they are expensive and are not reimbursed. Het Nieuwsblad gives the example of a family of 4 who paid less than 400 euros for ivermectin treatment.
The disease is not yet quickly identified by doctors. Without a rapid diagnosis, a sick person can infect those around them. Most often, clusters are detected in schools and daycares.
