The rivalry between Morocco and Algeria is growing with the issue of control of the Nigeria-Europe gas pipeline, which adds to the long dispute over Western Sahara. Morocco seeks to strengthen its influence in North Africa by creating economic and geopolitical alliances with Mali, Burkina and Niger, proposing an opening to the Atlantic for these landlocked nations. This strategic maneuver is part of the perspective of Moroccan expansion, aiming to circumvent regional obstacles and obtain recognition of its sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Morocco, by attempting to position itself as an intermediary between Europe and the ‘rebel states’ of the Sahel, aspires to play a central role in negotiating existing tensions. Rabat is therefore considering integration into ECOWAS to extend its influence. At the same time, Algeria, which has a head start with a trans-Saharan gas pipeline already operational, praises the strategic importance of this infrastructure for the transport of gas to Europe. However, the Moroccan threat to the gas market persists, with the Shereef kingdom wishing to establish an alternative route along the Atlantic coast.
