The Growing Dengue Epidemic in Martinique: Impact on Children and High Incidence in Saint-Pierre and Diamant

The epidemiological situation in Martinique is not improving. Dengue monitoring indicators have continued to progress since the start of the epidemic which began at the end of last July. Children are also affected. Saint-Pierre and Diamant are the most affected municipalities.

The dengue epidemic is still growing and last week (between September 11 and 17) was no exception to the rule. The increase in the estimated number of cases seen in primary care for dengue syndrome continues with 830 patients recorded last week compared to 705 between September 4 and 10. This represents a 15% increase in 1 week
It is estimated that 6,500 patients consulted primary care doctors for dengue syndrome.

60% of hospitalizations concern children

The remarkable phenomenon of last week (between September 11 and 17) is that of the 67 emergency visits recorded, 40 were in the pediatric emergency room. These 67 visits to the emergency room resulted in 19 hospitalizations, including 8 hospitalizations of pediatric cases reported by the MFME services. Pediatric services also reported the eexistence of thrombocytopenia severe.

Over the last two weeks, clinically suggestive cases have been reported in 18 municipalities in Martinique. The municipalities reporting the highest incidence rates are the municipalities of Diamond and Saint-Pierre.
