The Green Deal and the Future of Climate Neutrality: Real Sustainability

Nature follows its own rules and makes no compromises. That’s why real climate protection only works with real sustainability.

This week will be remembered for a long time. These are the days when the European Union dreamed a dream. The “Green Deal” was brought to the ground unceremoniously. Although: At first it didn’t look like it, but a core message of European climate policy was made more precise. On the way to net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, a reduction of 90 percent should be achieved ten years in advance. It sounded as if Europe was taking its historical responsibility seriously and showing how a modern society combines climate neutrality and prosperity.

But even this announcement might not hide the fact that there is a catch: almost a tenth of the 2040 milestone is to be achieved by pressing carbon dioxide into pumped-out deposits of natural gas and oil reserves. Of course, this is currently nothing more than a dream of the future: There are many unanswered questions regarding the deep storage of carbon dioxide (CCS) (not just those regarding financing): Are there any undesirable side effects? How much CO2 falls by the wayside, i.e. escapes prematurely into the atmosphere on its way down into the depths? How long does it take before a real net zero is achieved, i.e. until the emissions from building a CCS system are offset?
