Tomasz Berkieta is currently the greatest hope of men’s tennis in Poland. The 17-year-old played an excellent season last year. In July, he unexpectedly advanced to the junior quarterfinals of Wimbledon. On the way, he defeated one of the main favorites of this event, Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez. However, he was eliminated following losing to the Russian Jarosław Demin. Later, the Pole won the junior tournament in Vigo. He ended the season in 16th place in the junior ranking. After the New Year, there was good news.

Tomasz Berkieta’s success in life. What a promotion. Good news before the Australian Open
The ITF organization has published the latest update of the junior world ranking. Although Berkieta last played on the court before Christmas in Monastir, he still advanced by as many as nine places. How is this possible? Players over 18 years of age who can no longer play at junior level have been removed from the lists. Thus, the Pole takes the highest position in his career: seventh. Previously, his best result was 11th place.
The leader of the junior lists is Berkieta’s contemporary, Brazilian Joao Fonseca. He accumulated as many as 1,259.25 points more than the Pole, even though he played fewer tournaments. Our tennis player can still have great reasons to be satisfied. A place in the top ten of this ranking means that he will be seeded high in the upcoming junior Australian Open, for which he has been officially registered. The event will take place on January 20-27.
Hubert Hurkacz was beaten by Berkiet. It’s still a long way from being the best
Berkieta’s achievement also stands out from other Polish tennis players. The 17-year-old is now at a much higher level than Hubert Hurkacz was when he was his age. Currently, the ninth player in the ATP ranking under the age of 18 has not even come close to the top ten of the junior ranking. His highest ranking was 29th.
However, Berkieta is not the best in Poland in this respect. In 2014, Kamil Majchrzak took the same seventh place, while in 2008, Jerzy Janowicz was two places higher. Our ladies also performed better. For Iga Świątek, the highest place was fifth, but she won the junior Wimbledon and then quickly moved on to play with the seniors. In turn, Agnieszka Radwańska was once even the leader of the junior lists.
