Los Angeles (USA), Oct 3 (EFE).- The Grammy Awards Academy achieved its renewal goals by including more than 3,000 women among its members with voting rights, but it is still far from parity, according to a report published this Thursday.
The Recording Academy proposed in 2019 to begin a renewal process to improve representation among its members and set the goal of including 2,500 women by 2025, but, despite having managed to exceed that figure a year earlier, men continue representing 62% of its members.
Even so, the awards celebrate that the percentage of women has grown by almost 30% in the last five years.
Likewise, the new Grammys will be awarded by a more ethnically diverse jury: the percentage of non-white people has grown by 65%.
This increase is considerably noticeable among black people, who are 90% more, and Asian people, who have doubled their representation. However, almost half of the jury, 49%, continues to be white.
In general terms, the new additions have represented a true renewal of the Academy, since 66% of the members of the current jury were not there before 2019.
For the general director of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr., the members of the institution “have never been as representative of the musical community as today.”
“There are more women, more people of color and a broad representation of various genders and professions,” she applauded.
