The government’s demand was rejected; Mukul Rohatgi will not take up the post of Attorney General – Mukul Rohatgi | Attorney General

New Delhi: Mukul Rohatgi was scheduled to take over the position on October 1, rejecting the central government’s demand to take over the post of Attorney General. Rohatgi said that there was a rethink in taking the position once more. The current AG KK Venugopal will retire on 30th of this month.

Supreme Court senior advocate and constitutional expert KK Venugopal was appointed in July 2017. When his three-year tenure ended in 2020, the government asked Venugopal to continue for one more year. After Venugopal informed the central government that he was not continuing, Rohatgi was once more considered. Rohatgi was also the AG in 2014–17. With Rohatgi’s withdrawal, government-level discussions for the next AG began.
