“We expect the USOF (Universal Service Obligation Fund) R&D fund to serve as a seed fund to attract more industry investment. C-DOT (Telematics Development Center) has established a collaborative platform where industry investments can be leveraged to create a technology stack that can be used by industry to approach markets,” he said.

During the event, it was highlighted that 5G would allow citizens to get 100 Mbit/s speeds in motion, and that the cumulative economic impact of 5G might reach $1 trillion by 2035 in the country. The DoT recently launched a consultation paper seeking input on how to reform the telecommunications legal framework to bring it in line with global developments and changing technologies.

Vaishnaw had also said that the government was working on a mechanism to provide annual R&D support of ₹500 crore to the industry.
