The Government of Mexico’s Aid and Relief Efforts for Hurricane Otis: Updates on Care and Distribution of Humanitarian Aid

(CNN Spanish) — The Government of Mexico reported on the care and aid actions that are being provided to the area affected by Hurricane Otis.

Through a statement published this Friday, the Government said that the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) have implemented an airlift with the purpose of accelerating the distribution of humanitarian aid.

Among the actions highlighted by the authorities are:

• The transportation of 6,000 groceries and 3,000 liters of bottled water by land.
• By air, the transfer of 8.6 tons of groceries and six tons of water.
• They also reported the delivery of 8,170 food supplies and 16,080 liters of water
• In addition, they announced that this Saturday 10,100 more groceries would be delivered in the Arroyo Seco, Zapata, Sabana, Central de Abastos and Laguna de Tres Palos neighborhoods.

The Government also reported that the Health sector has deployed ambulance helicopters to facilitate hospital transfers. It is expected that regarding 100 patients will be taken to Magdalena de las Salinas and La Raza.

The Ministry of Health is providing psychological care to the affected population and has deployed 132 health professionals to offer medical consultations.

The authorities added that this team includes 34 specialists and 30 general practitioners, thus ensuring comprehensive care to those who require it.

Additionally, the Mexican Red Cross announced that 20 tons of humanitarian aid is on the way, strengthening assistance efforts and the arrival of 40 tons of humanitarian aid is expected from Mexico City.

The Government added that it reestablished access to the Mexico-Acapulco highway, which now operates normally. In addition, it opened a lane on the federal highway and is working on repairing several routes:

• Chilpancingo-Acapulco
• Chilpancingo-Acatlán de Osorio
• The Chilpancingo-Tlapa section limits with Guerrero and Puebla at kilometer 110+700
• As well as in the La Venta section, where a sinkhole was reported at kilometer 16.

The Government also reported that the control tower of the Acapulco International Airport was recovered, which allowed the implementation of an air bridge between said terminal and the Mexico City International Airport (AICM). As a result, airlines such as Aeroméxico, Volaris and VivaAerobús have operated free commercial flights to evacuate 450 visitors.
