“Saturated” by an influx of migrants, Djibouti is tightening the screw. Interior Minister Said Nouh Hassan announced on Sunday two operations to “control these flows”, including the establishment of a “traffic document” for foreigners working.

For questions of “security and public health”, the government of Djibouti announced, Sunday, April 30, a campaign of repression of illegal immigration.

Interior Minister Said Nouh Hassan estimated that the country in the Horn of Africa, “which has recently become one of the busiest routes for migration”, was “saturated” by an influx of people from the neighboring countries, in a televised address.

He announced two operations to “control these flows”: foreigners in an irregular situation, exercising an informal activity, will be registered and “we will provide them with a circulation document” if their employers declare them, while those without activity are invited ” to return immediately and voluntarily to their country of origin”.

He said illegal immigrants have 30 days to comply with the new rules.

Thousands of arrests

But according to state television, around 3,000 people were arrested by police on Sunday for deportation.

“The security forces were forced this Sunday, April 30, 2023 to carry out an emergency operation to combat crime and the trafficking of illicit products observed in a sector of Djibouti city”, confirmed Said Nouh Hassan.

According to him, 220,000 migrants arrived “illegally” in 2022 alone in Djibouti, which has a population of around one million. “But unfortunately, a fairly large number of this population remains in the territory every year,” he added.
