The government is looking for places where large-scale construction can take place following 2030. In the long term, more housing is needed for the growing population. Outgoing Minister Hugo de Jonge (Housing) is looking at regions outside the Randstad.

The Dutch population might grow from 17.8 million to 20.6 million in 2050, statistics agency CBS has calculated. The government wants to have built more than 900,000 new homes by 2030. But those construction plans do not yet provide enough houses for the long term, De Jonge writes in a letter to the House of Representatives.

That is why he wants to look for places that are suitable for large-scale housing construction. These are locations that can accommodate more than three thousand homes. Consideration must also be given to the infrastructure for the new neighborhoods, the construction of greenery, drinking water and care in the neighborhood.

De Jonge explicitly looks at areas outside the Randstad. For example, he mentions the Eindhoven region, the Stedendriehoek (Apeldoorn, Zutphen and Deventer), Twente, South Limburg and the region between Groningen and Assen with an extension to Emmen.

There are currently 400,000 too few homes. The construction of new houses is not happening as quickly as desired. This is partly due to the lack of staff, the outgoing cabinet previously announced. Moreover, house prices have fallen, while construction costs and interest rates are rising.
