The European Parliament has today re-elected Ursula von der Leyen as Commission President for the period 2024–2029.
– Ursula von der Leyen has led the commission with pragmatism and clarity for five years with both the pandemic and Russia’s war against Ukraine. Her leadership contributes to stability in an uncertain time. I look forward to continuing that cooperation – for support to Ukraine, for increased competitiveness and for the green transition, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
– The approval is a big step towards getting a new commission in place. With Ursula von der Leyen, the EU gets an active, experienced and competent Commission President who will lead the work for a free and secure Europe, says EU Minister Jessika Roswall.
The next step in the process is for the EU Council of Ministers and the elected Commission President to jointly determine a list of commissioners. The candidates are then questioned in the European Parliament, which then votes to approve the Commission as a whole.
