“That is what is expected of a state party,” said the Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, who calls on the PP to articulate a “democratic cordon” that prevents Vox from accessing any Executive

In La Moncloa they are “expectant” before the new direction adopted by the Popular Party. Since the beginning of the serious crisis that the party is suffering, the government has expressed distance and respect, as well as the desire for a quick solution to the internal conflict so that Spain has a strong opposition.

But that does not prevent the Executive from assigning duties to those who, except for surprise, take the witness from Pablo Casado. The government coalition has demanded that Alberto Nez Feijo, as a “first measure” as president of the PP, agree to renew the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) and, subsequently, weave a “democratic cordon” that isolates Vox and prevents him from enter the Administration of any territory.

This is how the Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, has expressed herself this Friday, who has considered that these two steps will serve to demonstrate the “sense of State” that Feijo has boasted of on numerous occasions. “That is what is expected of a state party,” the minister settled.

The Government’s suggestion comes at a complex time: the PP is in a period of interregnum until its next congress is held in Seville on April 2 and 3, and the government coalition is fully focused on managing the conflict in Ukraine. The war has once more divided the PSOE and United We Can, despite the fact that both partners showed unity during the first days of the crisis and agreed that Spain should keep a low profile on the matter and follow the instructions and plans of the EU.

Relationship between PSOE and PP

But the 180-degree turn taken by Pedro Snchez in deciding to finally send offensive weapons to the Ukrainian resistance on a bilateral basis has once once more set off alarms within the Government. Podemos stresses that it is “an error” that “contributes” to the escalation of the war while the one who is called to be its next official leader, Yolanda Díaz, aligns herself with the PSOE and assures that Ukraine has the right to defense.

An earthquake in the heart of the Executive that, together with the proposals that Alberto Nez Feijo will be the next leader of the opposition, feeds the theory of a greater understanding between socialists and popular. In fact, from Podemos it is believed that Sánchez’s rectification of sending weapons to Ukraine responds to the fact that the PSOE has succumbed to pressure from the right.

“A new scenario has opened,” Llop has defined regarding the stage that the PP is facing in these weeks. “I have heard Mr. Feijo talk regarding his sense of State and that the PP is a State party with a sense of State. I hope that this sense of State demonstrates it in a first action,” he said in reference to the “renewal “of the CGPJ, something that might not be achieved with Pablo Casado at the head of the party.

“important gesture”

“It is an issue that directly affects our image and our institutional and international prestige, that affects our rule of law and that affects our democracy,” the minister asked the Galician leader.

In addition, he has demanded that he “make a second important gesture: put that democratic cordon to the extreme right, to Vox”, and thus keep Santiago Abascal’s party out of the institutions.

For the moment, the new PP already calls Vox “extreme right” and Feijo, who has been critical of the party to date, is expected to distance himself from this formation. However, and as reported by this newspaper this Thursday, it will give “total freedom” to the barons when it comes to studying possible pacts, such as the one currently being negotiated in Castilla y León.
