“The Golden Boy,” an HBO Max Original Documentary, Premieres July 24

The HBO original documentary, titled “The Golden Boy” and directed by award-winning filmmaker Fernando Villena (known for works such as HBO’s “Dear Rider” and “Any One of Us”), will premiere on HBO on Monday, July 24 , at 10 pm, with the second part airing on July 25, at the same time. Both episodes will be available on HBO Max starting July 24. “The Golden Boy” had its world premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival.

Oscar De La Hoya was a gold medalist in Olympic boxing, a professional boxer who won several world titles, as well as being a local hero and role model for the Mexican-American community in East Los Angeles. Known as the “Golden Boy”, De La Hoya rose to national fame with his attractive looks, charisma and an emotional story of how he won an Olympic gold medal for his mother, who was in critical condition. However, not everything was as perfect as it seemed.

“The Golden Boy” documentary presents De La Hoya’s story through candid interviews by the boxer himself and rare archival footage. He reveals the many layers of this celebrated yet complex figure, exploring his personal triumphs and struggles, exposing a man who battled demons throughout his life and carried the burden of a nickname he failed to live up to.

Part 1 – July 24th at 10 pm

The first part of the documentary details the rise of the young East Los Angeles boxing phenom, his difficult upbringing and the emotional commitment he made to his mother as he prepared for the Olympics that made him a media sensation. As a professional boxer, Oscar De La Hoya quickly became a star, winning multiple world titles and being recognized as one of the best fighters in the world. Furthermore, its charm and appeal has captivated the general public. However, behind his numerous accolades and great popularity, there were turmoil that threatened to crumble the carefully constructed image of his public persona.

Part 2 – July 25 at 10 pm HBO MAX

The second part chronicles the growth of Oscar De La Hoya’s boxing empire with the creation of Golden Boy Promotions, as well as his foray into entertainment with the release of a Latin pop music album. However, his self-destructive behavior continued to damage his public image and disrupt his personal life. As De La Hoya finally begins to take stock of his life and relationships, he seeks to find forgiveness for the damage caused along the way.

In addition to the intimate interviews with Oscar De La Hoya, the documentary also features insights from family, friends and associates, including his father Joel De La Hoya Sr., his sister Cecilia De La Hoya, his brother Joel De La Hoya Jr. and their children Atiana De La Hoya, Jacob De La Hoya and Devon De La Hoya; his ex-fiancée Shanna Moakler, his childhood friend and business partner Eric Gomez, former trainer Jesus Rivero, boxing promoter Bob Arum, boxing legend Bernard Hopkins and his former lover Milana Dravnel.

“The Golden Boy” is an HBO Sports Documentaries documentary produced by Unrealistic Ideas in partnership with ViaMar Productions and Universal Television Alternative Studio (UTAS). The film is directed by Fernando Villena and is executive produced by Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson, Archie Gips, Mario Lopez, Jeffrey Stearns and David Wendell. For HBO, the executive producers are Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller and Bentley Weiner, and the coordinating producer is Abtin Motia.
