“The Global Tango Phenomenon: Exploring its History, Evolution, and Cultural Impact”

The tango is still extremely popular and is used as a musical foil for current events: just a few days ago, the Gotan Project released a song that laconically but emphatically addresses the climate catastrophe with “La 6ta extinción”. At the same time, all 16 concerts at festivals such as “La Locura Tango”, held recently in Innsbruck, are sold out.

Originating around 1865 in the slums of the Rio de la Plata estuary, the tango soon became “a fundamental symbol in the struggle for Argentina’s national identity throughout the 20th century” (Gerard Béhague in “Music Past and Present”). Tango has long since spread globally, far beyond the borders of Argentina. It is found mixed with other styles, but is also still played as pure dance music.

The Tuesday playrooms thus bring the second part of a loose series on the major genres of traditional music summarized in the much-discussed term “world music” in current recordings. Of course, fado and rebetiko, qawwali or afrobeat, Wienerlied or gospel originated decades before the invention of the “world music” label.
