The global smartphone market continues to contract, with a 7.8% decrease in smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year, according to figures from International Data Corporation (IDC). Only 265.3 million smartphones were shipped between April and June 2023. Weak demand, inflation, macroeconomic uncertainties and excess inventory continue to impact the market, but inventory is expected to decline. flow towards the end of the third quarter of this year, allowing the market to return to growth towards the end of the year and the beginning of 2024.

The Chinese smartphone market saw a decline of 2.1% in the second quarter of 2023, while other regions such as Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan and China), the United States, Europe and the Middle East and Africa also saw declining smartphone shipments during the same period.

Despite the general decline in the smartphone market, the foldable phone segment is expected to grow nearly 50% in 2023, according to IDC.

In terms of manufacturer rankings, Samsung remains in the lead with 53.5 million phones shipped worldwide and a market share of 20.2%. Apple ranks second with 42.5 million iPhones sold, followed by Xiaomi in third place with 33.2 million units shipped. However, all three manufacturers saw their shipments drop between 2022 and 2023.
