The Global Rice Market Crisis: Insights from Financial Afrik’s Great Debate on September 15, 2023

India, China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand are the major rice producers in the world. As of July 20, 2023, India has decided not to export non-basmati white rice. Following this decision, the price of rice increased internationally and reduced global supply by around a fifth. Vietnam, for its part, increased the price of rice following strong demand and Pakistan’s introduction of a minimum export price. All these reasons are creating disruptions in the global market, also in West Africa, the main rice market on the continent, with 60% of the total consumed.
