ABU DHABI, 16th May, 2020 (WAM) — The Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination has announced the opening of registration to participate in the international competition, “The Global Information Technology Challenge for People of Determination,” which will be hosted by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in October 2023, for the first time in the Middle East, at the Abu Dhabi International Center. exhibitions and conferences, with the aim of promoting digital awareness and learning digital skills as a factor for young people of determination with “developmental disabilities”.
The challenge is an initiative that falls directly into the national policy to empower people of determination launched by the UAE government with the aim of empowering them, and in line with the strategy of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi for people of determination, which aims to make Abu Dhabi an inclusive city, ready for people of determination and supportive of their rights.
The competition aims to enable people of determination to access information with their individual capabilities without the need for assistance from others. The competition is also an opportunity to bridge the digital divide, which represents one of the challenges for any digital transformation initiative for this group of people of determination “with developmental disabilities”.
Asaad Hawass, Director of the Foundation’s Project Management Office, said that registration and receiving applications to participate in the competition continues until the end of next June through the link, and all applications are received, followed by an evaluation of the registrants through the preliminary test to select 50-60 students to qualify for the preliminary round, then the qualified ones will be registered. For the preliminary round at the main site of the competition in Korea, provided that the international competition will be held in October of this year, and those wishing to register to participate are required to have a laptop computer.
He added that the Foundation, in partnership with the supporting entities represented by Cyber Gate for Electronic Protection, the Cyber Security Council, Abu Dhabi Polytechnic University, and Al Ain University of Science and Technology, provides training for participants of determination who wish to develop their skills in the fields of information and communication technology.
He pointed out that the training provided by a group of experienced trainers in this field will include everything related to the challenge and areas of participation, and the necessary technical support and educational materials will be provided to achieve the maximum benefit for the students enrolled in the training, expressing his hope that the participants will benefit and achieve positive results in the competition that will be hosted by Abu Dhabi. in October 2023.
For her part, Latifa Saeed Al Khaili, Director of Project Follow-up and Management at the Project Management Office at the Foundation, said that the competition consists of six areas, with the possibility of people of determination participating in more than one area, which is the area of assessing the skills of creating and editing presentations using PowerPoint, and the second area is assessing the skills necessary to use jobs and calculating Data and editing them in certain circumstances using Excel, and the third is assessing research skills and benefiting from information that deals with daily life problems using the international information network (the Internet).
She indicated that the fourth area includes assessing the skills of making and editing videos that deal with specific topics creatively, the fifth assessing the skills of using the Scratch program to program self-driving cars (coding), and the sixth and final area assessing skills to make life more suitable for people of determination through information technology or The main idea.
It is worth noting that the Global Information Technology Challenge for People of Determination (GITC) is a project to enhance the information and communication technology capabilities of young people of these categories, lay the foundation for social progress and improve awareness of their digital accessibility. The event will be hosted in the UAE and the Middle East for the first time as an Arab country.
The challenge began in 1992 in South Korea with the aim of reducing the digital divide for people of these categories, and since 2011 it has been expanded to include young people of determination all over the world with a focus on the Asia and Pacific region to enhance their participation in society by enrolling in higher education and finding job opportunities. In 2024, it will be developed into a more sustainable competition by enhancing the credibility of the internationally renowned competition and the independence of the participating countries.
