The mummy, which did not bear any hieroglyphs to reveal its name, was first CT scanned in 2011, revealing new details regarding the body.
Now, her true face has been revealed more than 1,500 years following her death, showing her “exact” features when she was alive.
The facial reconstruction was aided by the careful preservation of the mummy, said Cicero Moraes, lead author of the new study.
“The skeleton is very well preserved, in the original state in which it was discovered, without unwrapping the mummy. What is striking is the presence of short curly hair, which can be seen in the CT reconstruction. First, we reconstructed the skull, based on the CT scan, and later modified the position of the jaw. The skull allows us to model structures such as the nose, ears, eye position, lip border, etc., using data measured in CT scans of living people,” he added.
Given its origins in Roman-occupied Egypt, tissue thickness data from contemporary European women, aged 40 to 49 years, were used.
The resulting face is blended with another face created using a process called anatomical deformation.
“This is where we modify the face and skull of a virtual donor to fit the criteria of the Golden Lady, resulting in a structurally compatible face,” Moraes said. “Finally, we review all the data, adjusting the predictions to create the final face.”
It is noteworthy that the remains are now preserved in the Field Museum in the American city of Chicago.
The study was published in Anthropology – the international journal of human diversity and evolution.
