The famous astrophysicist Hubert Reeves East mort on October 13, 2023 at the age of 91. And if for many he was a known figure, as a scientific popularizer or a tireless environmentalist, in the Gers, it was much more than that. A special tribute was therefore paid to him in Fleurance Thursday October 19.

The college has been named following him for 23 years
And the link does not stop there, since to act on the “radiation” and “the significant educational impact in the life of the college” of the city, the Department decided to name it in his name in 2000 (it did not have one then). A rare honor for a personality still alive.
“Canadian of origin but Gersois at heart, Hubert Reeves gave the astronomy festival, of which he was the sponsor, a reputation on a European scale, making Fleurance a first-rate place of knowledge on astronomy”, said Philippe Dupouy, the president of the Department, in his speech.

An ecologist
“A true jack of all trades, he was also passionate regarding botany, a lover of nature and above all a fervent defender of the environment who raised awareness regarding the fall in biodiversity and the state of our planet,” also recalled Philippe Dupouy .
A green oak was therefore planted in the college courtyard following the ceremony.
