The German Chancellor welcomes a gas deal with Qatar as a step towards energy security

welcomed German Chancellor Olaf Scholzwith a new LNG deal with Qatar as a “brick” in his country’s energy security, and a sign that Berlin has many different countries to turn to for supplies.

Qatar Energy and ConocoPhillips signed two purchase and sale agreements to export two million tons of liquefied natural gas annually to Germany for at least 15 years, starting from 2026, with Berlin seeking new partnerships in the field of energy following a decrease in gas imports from Russia.

“I am very confident that this is another important building block in a house that is already largely completed,” Scholz told a news briefing on Tuesday, noting that global problems should not make countries raise trade barriers.

Standing next to the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, and the heads of other organizations, Scholz added that Germany had not ruled out an offer to provide Poland with Patriot air defense units that Warsaw might send to Ukraine.

Scholz confirmed that he had spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding issues including the possible sending of Gephard tanks to Ukraine.
