The head of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergei Lavrov, addressed issues at the UN such as the danger of renewed US expansionist attempts and the importance of the geopolitical movement led by his country and China to establish a more inclusive and plural world. Sputnik spoke with experts to analyze his intervention.

Read on SputnikIn his long-awaited speech, made this Saturday, September 23, before the United Nations General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized the United States and Europe for “not wanting a multipolar world”, calling for a fairer distribution of resources and highlighting partnerships such as the BRICS to offer opportunities for countries in the global south to develop.

This strong defense of the new international order, led by Beijing and Moscow, and the consideration of what he called an “emerging multipolar architecture” were the most notable points of the Russian Chancellor’s speech, according to the specialists consulted by Sputnik.

Analysts also highlighted Lavrov’s complaints on NATO’s new expansionism (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) in several regions of the world and its request to end the blockade of Cuba and the sanctions against Venezuela that Washington maintains in both cases.

“Chancellor Lavrov’s words matter because they present an alternative point of view to the Western discourse and that of its media. At its core, his speech revolves around the question: what kind of international order, of global governance, should we defend, to positively impact the greatest number of people?”, estimated international relations teacher David García, a graduate of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)..

“And a session of the General Assembly of Nations is an unbeatable platform to raise this issue, since it is the most democratic body of this organization, since each state of the 193 that make it up has one vote” in it, he added. also a foreign policy analyst.

In this sense, the specialist observed that in his speech “Lavrov called for balancing the balance, making a resounding defense of the new multipolar order and the importance of listening to all countries and their needs; therefore, the denunciation of the United States and its partners for focusing solely on the conflict in Ukraine during the General Assembly to promote their own interests and ignore the problems of the rest of the countries.

And he adds: “What Foreign Minister Lavrov asks is not to exalt the (Ukrainian) conflict as if it were the only problem, when there are so many other world issues that should be a priority, but now international institutions, especially due to pressure from States “The United States and its NATO partners have decided not to address it, given that it is more profitable for them to focus on promoting an anti-Russian campaign.”

García also highlighted the condemnation of the foreign minister of the Slavic country towards the commercial blockade of Cuba by the US, asking that the embargo be ended, as well as that the sanctions on Syria and Venezuela be lifted.

Lavrov also welcomed the process of normalization of relations between Syria and Turkey, and asked that the US and the European Union not intervene in the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. In another passage of his speech, the Russian official stated that “a new world order is being born before our eyes” and pointed out that the West sees NATO’s advance in the Asia-Pacific region as a benefit, while it considers the expansion of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) as a danger to his dominion.”Empire of lies”: Lavrov blames the US for failing to fulfill its commitments to the rest of the world

Likewise, the minister stressed that “a global minority is doing everything possible to stop the natural course of things”, exemplifying this with the growth of associations such as the aforementioned BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

These blocks, he estimated “offer opportunities for countries in the Global South develop together and reclaim their leading place in the objectively emerging multipolar architecture.

At the same time, Lavrov said that there was a strong impression that the United States and the “Western collective totally subordinated to it” have decided to give the Monroe doctrine a “global projection,” mentioning the different regional alliances forged by the United States in the Asia-Pacific region. Pacific with the aim of counteracting the growth of China and Russia in their natural sphere of influence. Does the US want to turn the Indo-Pacific region into its new backyard?

For teacher Sandra Kanety, research professor at the Center of International Relations of the Faculty of Political Sciences of the UNAM, the Russian chancellor sought to remind the rest of the countries the dangers of imperialist logic carried out by the United States and its Western partners beyond their own borders.

“In recent years, Russia has strengthened its relations with countries such as China and Brazil, and in general the entire global south, which is why Foreign Minister Lavrov uses his podium to echo their claims, showing solidarity with their problems. and exhibiting very important political support for these partners, while condemning the practices of attempted domination by the US,” said the university student.

“It is important to remember that this new impulse for multipolarism is born because the rest of the countries that are not the United States and its NATO partners, with some exceptions, have never had the power of decision-making on the global board,” he estimated. .

“For this reason, the demand for a new world order is important, since it seeks to establish new rules to obtain better economic results, in security and in other areas, and that the beneficiaries are not only a few, as has historically happened. “That’s what Foreign Minister Lavrov’s speech was about,” the Mexican academic told Sputnik.

Kanety believes that the struggle to establish a new multipolar order could take years and a great collective effort, but that it is an essential and valuable goal.

“It is true that there is a US decline in the last 20 years as a global powerbut it still continues to have a very important influence in organizations such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and NATO itself,” observed the university student.

“However, the growth of countries like China and Russia, and instruments to counteract the influence of the West such as the BRICS, suggest that the formation of a multipolar world is possible, where the countries of the global south can have decision-making power in areas such as the Security Council and that work be done to enhance prosperity for these countries,” he concluded.
