The Conselleria d’Investigació i Universitats wants to ensure that research complies with the welfare of puppies
The Ministry ofResearch and Universities of the Generalitat has sent a request for information to the government of the Community of Madrid regarding the company Vivotecnia, in charge of pharmacological study with purebred dog puppies Beagle that finally it will not be done in Catalonia but in Madrid.
Studies without animal abuse
In a statement this Thursday, the department has assured that the requirement is part of its “commitment” to develop scientific investigations of excellence compatible with the welfare of the animals.
The Ministry wants to ensure that the company, responsible for the ‘in vivo’ study of the preclinical phase of the RETOS project (which seeks to develop a drug for liver fibrosis and myelofibrosis) “complies with the standards of the Catalan research system and universities”.
The department has argued that pharmacological research in Catalonia they only carry out ‘in vivo’ studies with animals when it’s “impossible to assess the safety of the candidate molecule with ‘in silico’ or ‘in vitro’ tests”.

Consequently, according to the Conselleria, the preclinical phase is carried out “in regulatory compliance of the European Medicines Agency and rigorously following all established regulations and standards”.
The Catalan scientific community “always works with the commitment to adequately weigh the progress of research and the conduct of studies that involve a preclinical phase ‘in vivo'”.
