A total of four cover songs from someone else’s hand as well as our own back catalog: The Gaslight Anthem donate to their comeback album History Books another appendix Short Stories.
Of all things, the opening one works best Ocean Eyes – an interpretation of the Billie Eilish song, which, with its brisk drive and Karina Rykman on the Alex Reed list, is surprisingly natural and potentially suitable for the stadium Gaslight Anthem-Standard is adapted, and thus works all around snappy like an in-house catchy tune.
It’s also absolutely clear followingwards Blue Jeans & White T-Shirtsa new recording of the Señor and the Queen-Classic, which is reworked into soft arrangements in a dreamy ambience: an absolutely pleasant and tasteful version, although not really essential.
However, only the two attached acoustic versions are really redundant History Books-numbers Positive Charge and the title song (which, with piano and plucked strings, erratically erodes its sentimental melancholy to the point of sad pathos): they are inconsequential and pleasing, especially since they lack the relatively unpolished sound of the album presentations for the necessary verve.
If you’re a die-hard Fallon fan, you’ll want to Short Stories Put it on the shelf anyway (or perhaps because of it) – but viewed half-way (with fan glasses), the EP is at most half-interesting.
