Mateh Asher Regional Council Chairman Moshe Davidovich told Education Minister Yoav Kisch that he “will not communicate with the government,” expressing the northern mayors’ anger at what they felt was a weak preemptive strike against Lebanese factions on Sunday that showed preferential treatment for the country’s center.
Speaking at a meeting with northern mayors and officers from the IDF Home Front Command ahead of the new school year, Davidovich said he “will not allow the school year to open in schools, kindergartens and unprotected educational facilities, in a place where the IDF does not know how to protect young people.”
“You have shown us how much you despise us,” he added, referring to the northern municipality’s complaint that Israel attacked Lebanese factions only because the center of the country was in danger.
“We will remember you in the history books as those who abandoned our children,” he continued.
In turn, the head of the Upper Galilee Regional Council, Giora Zaltz, described Netanyahu’s government as a “gang,” and stressed in statements to Channel 12 that he would not host any of this government’s ministers or Knesset members until security was restored in the north and there was a real economic plan to develop this region.
For his part, David Azoulay, head of the Metula Regional Council, said that “the Israeli army’s attacks were only to remove the threat to the city of Tel Aviv,” considering that “there is a real distinction between the residents of the north and the rest of the residents of Israel… Our blood in the north is different from the blood of the rest of the residents of Israel.”
The head of the Eastern Galilee Settlement Group, Benny Ben Movhar, also called for concluding an agreement with the Lebanese factions that would restore security and stability to the northern settlements, considering that UN Security Council Resolution 1701 was “deceptive” to Israel, noting that Israel “now needs new negotiations with the aim of reaching an agreement that would allow the settlers to return to their homes in the north.”
