The G7 foreign ministers meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York asked the Venezuelan authorities this Tuesday to “put an end to human rights violations” and expressed their indignation at the arrest warrant and the threats to the opponent, Edmundo González.

In a statement by the Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, as representative of the G7, he expressed “deep concern about the situation in Venezuela, after the vote on July 28” and emphasized that the victory proclaimed by President Nicolás Maduro, “lacks credibility and democratic legitimacy, as indicated by the reports of the UN Panel of Experts and independent international observers, as well as the data published by the opposition.”

The representatives of Italy, Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Japan and the United Kingdom again asked “that the electoral results be complete and independently verified to guarantee respect for the will of the Venezuelan people.”

Indignation

Likewise, “they expressed their indignation at the arrest warrant and the constant threats to the security of the opposition candidate, “who decided to seek refuge in Spain” and mentioned that according to “the aforementioned independent reports, Edmundo González Urrutia seems to have obtained the largest amount of votes” on July 28.

They further urged “Venezuelan representatives to put an end to all human rights violations and abuses, arbitrary detentions and widespread restrictions on fundamental freedoms, which particularly affect the political opposition, human rights defenders and representatives of independent media and civil society.

And they called for “the release of all political prisoners and a path to freedom and democracy for the people of Venezuela.”

While they urged the international community “to keep Venezuela high on the diplomatic agenda and expressed their support for the efforts of regional partners to facilitate the democratic and peaceful transition.”
