In a recent email to employees, Xbox head Sarah Bond shared Microsoft’s plans for the next Xbox console and revealed the formation of a new team working to preserve the existing Xbox game library for future hardware. “We are moving full speed ahead on our next-gen hardware, with a focus on delivering the biggest technology leap ever in a single generation,” Sarah Bond, head of Xbox, said in the email.
However, the email confirms that Microsoft is hard at work on the next Xbox, but it’s still unclear at what stage of development the company’s next-gen console hardware is at.
Microsoft’s identity has been under pressure recently as sales of the Xbox Series S/ On PS5 and Nintendo Switch and the severe lack of triple exclusives on its own platform has left the Xbox parent company in a noticeably weak position in the console market.
However, Microsoft boasts a strong portfolio of game studios, especially since its successful acquisition of Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard last year, while the Xbox Series S/X consoles have failed to move forward in terms of premium first-party titles so far. Upcoming big releases like Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle are likely to launch this year to bring much needed wind into Xbox’s sails.
While Microsoft has not revealed a launch window for the next generation of Xbox consoles, court documents from the FTC trial in June last year revealed that the company expects to launch the next generation of Xbox and PS6 in 2028.
