New study shows important trends until 2035.
The electronics industry needs to take a more customer-centric and proactive approach and create sustainable solutions to meet the needs of the planet. This is one of the central findings of the study “The Landscape of Circular Electronics Towards 2035”. Commissioned by the Circular Electronics Initiative, it provides an analysis of the developments expected to shape the field of circular electronics through 2035. It also identifies eight trends that you should keep an eye on.
The report calls on players in the electronics value chain to take action. The authors encourage adopting circular economic model practices more than before. Additionally, they highlight trends that are likely to shape the path to 2035. The report highlights the importance of rethinking the design, use and recycling of electronic devices – beyond traditional e-waste disposal.
“The report highlights eight trends that we believe are important to be aware of. The actors in the electronics supply chain should take these trends into account in their decisions in order to set the course towards a circular economy. “These are broad trends that come from different areas of society, such as technology, regulation and consumer habits,” says Olivier Rostang, future strategist at Kairos Future, which compiled the report.
The research provides a comprehensive overview of various developments that will influence the circular economy sector in electronics until 2035. She identifies the following eight
Key trends to highlight:
- Sustainability merges with geopolitics
- The EU is becoming increasingly important as a regulatory body
- Tracking, tracing and transparency are on the rise
- Despite setbacks, the circular economy is making progress
- Everything becomes electronic
- Shared economy – ownership faces serious competition
- AI will accelerate the transition to circular economy in electronics
- Consumers demand sustainable comfort and comfortable sustainability
“With this report we want to highlight the most important trends that will shape the future of circular economy in electronics. Our goal is to advance the discussion and stimulate collective action for a more sustainable future of electronics,” emphasizes Andreas Nobell, Development Manager at TCO Development, one of the founding members of the Circular Electronics Initiative.
The Circular Electronics Initiative is an international network of 31 member organizations that aim to promote more sustainable use of electronics. The impact of these macro trends underscores the initiative’s important mission and commitment to promoting a more sustainable electronics ecosystem.
