The Future of Politics: Overcoming Corruption and Creating Transparency in Governance

2023-06-05 00:21:45

The exercise of politics is not dirty by itself; its contaminated and opaque aura has been the product of poor performance by those who have the authority to make decisions that affect the community they represent. It is evident that politics, as an activity and as a system of governance, is an indispensable resource in the life of any organized society whose well-being depends on an intelligent vision of the distribution of its wealth, the balance of power among its institutions, and transparency in management of its authorities.

In our continent, with its trail of armed conflicts, human rights violations, submission to the power of economic-corporate empires and the generous sponsorship of drugs to candidates for governor, the word “politics” has gradually become synonymous with corruption. . The abuse of authority and the unpunished violation of laws and treaties, with the consequent generation of a kind of ideology of distrust whose force affects the present and future of nations, has caused an atmosphere of skepticism among today’s youth, which in many times he no longer believes -with good reason- in the system.

Young people have not only been deceived time and time once more, depriving them of opportunities to access a better life; They also lack the tools capable of providing necessary and reliable information on the different options and the electoral scenario. Education systems -which, by the way, depend on public policies- have been impoverished to satisfy the interests of economic elites, who depend on low-paid jobs and the imposition of their own agenda.

To this it is essential to add the framework of laws created by the legislative assemblies to their own measure, in order to maintain control over partisan political power, behind the backs of the citizenry. These systems have hindered the access of popular leaders to the high magistracies, have impeded the reformulation of electoral laws and have criminalized all opposition using a populist discourse with hints of Cold War tactics. That is to say, this exercise of politics has been consolidated as a weapon of attack once morest the societies to which it must render accounts.

There are few countries on our continent where there are still institutions capable of generating an acceptable level of confidence in the exercise of power. But, for the most part, they have been invaded by incapable, corrupt individuals, allied with the economic elites and subjected to the will of more powerful countries, whose interests take precedence over those of our peoples. This, without counting the pressures of criminal organizations of drug trafficking, human trafficking and prison control whose ominous presence is infiltrated even in the highest levels of Governments.

The first victims of this environment of skepticism and loss of credibility are the electoral processes. They strongly evidence the wear and tear of supposedly democratic systems that today do not withstand the slightest analysis. It is in these supposed “civic festivities” where the serious impoverishment of citizen power and the absence of political proposals capable of turning the screw on the discredit that prevails today is evident.

A corrupt government clearly tends towards the establishment of a dictatorship.
