The Future of Nuclear Power in Switzerland: Insights from IAEA Director

The director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi says he sees an ‘excellent future’ for nuclear power in Switzerland. ‘I believe that Switzerland will continue to operate its power stations for several years,’ he said in the press on Friday.

‘Its nuclear fleet is impeccable with a record level of security,’ the Argentinian told Le Temps on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. So, I think that your country will continue to be one of the exploiting countries in the decades to come.’

With the construction of new power plants prohibited in Switzerland, the country would have to extend the lifespan of its current reactors if it wants to continue exploiting this energy. This is ‘one of the very effective ways to continue to benefit from nuclear power’, believes Mr Grossi.

‘In Switzerland, you have Beznau whose exploitation began in 1969, he adds. We are approaching the life cycle of a century for the oldest nuclear power plants. The head of the IAEA therefore sees ‘an excellent future’ for nuclear power in Switzerland.
