The Future of Energy: Nuclear Power and Renewable Energies at COP28

2023-12-03 10:35:00

In order to reduce dependence on coal and gas, twenty-two countries want to turn to nuclear energy, tripling capacities by 2050. A dangerous shift according to several environmentalists.

Will COP28 give a decisive boost to nuclear power and renewable energies, to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees at the end of the century? “We are at a pivotal moment,” summarized the President of the Confederation Alain Berset from the podium, while for the first time, the world climate conference has put the end of fossil fuels on its agenda.

It remains to agree on the path to take. Two concrete initiatives were launched on Saturday to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy, with a marked emphasis, placed by industrialized countries, on the construction of new nuclear power plants.
