The Future of AI in the Automotive Industry: Insights from Renault’s Luc Julia

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly present in the automotive industry, from car design to driver assistance. But they will never be completely autonomous, believes Luc Julia, AI specialist and head of research and development at Renault, in La Matinale.

Guest in La Matinale de La RTS, Luc Julia begins by explaining the multiple uses of AI in the automotive industry: “What we need to understand is that we can use these artificial intelligences everywhere. We can use them everywhere. use it to design cars for example. With today’s generative artificial intelligence, we can make new interesting designs. We will use this tool to get more ideas. It’s not something that will replace the designer, but it’s something that will help him, emancipate him.”

AI can predict when a robot will break down, enabling predictive maintenance

Luc Julia

The computer engineer continues: “AI can also be used in factories, where there are a lot of robots that generate a lot of data. It can predict when a robot will break down. And so as not to break the chain , we can do predictive maintenance to have better productivity. We can also go into any support function, human resources, purchasing, etc. We can always have an AI that will make things easier.”

Safer cars

As for driving, Luc Julia is more nuanced: “We are going to have more and more driving aids. We are going to have machines that are more and more autonomous. But the overall, ideal autonomy, which is called level five autonomy, that’s a dream, we won’t get there. To be clear, today we are at level two. Level five is really in the domain of dream.”

“On the other hand, level four will arrive, it will be almost autonomous. We will be able to have cars without a steering wheel, but from time to time, there will be necessary human interventions, remotely, to be able to get the car out of the mess in which it is stuck. “is set. But we cannot say, as Elon Musk repeats all day long, that the level five autumn car is for tomorrow. He has been saying that since 2014, we have been waiting for it for ten years. But on the other hand, we must continue to work towards level 4 autonomy, because this will allow us to have much safer cars.”

Be transparent regarding boundaries

Generally speaking, the Franco-American believes that we must put an end to the fantasies that AI arouses. “Developers need to be more open, they need to tell the truth regarding these machines, regarding these systems. When we listen to people like Sam Altman or Elon Musk, they give visions of the future that are not necessarily the right ones. More people need to speak out regarding these AIs.”

Hollywood’s artificial intelligence – that of Terminator or Her – does not exist

Luc Julia

Luc Julia insists: “You have to explain what its flaws are. When you know that ChatGPT gives you a 36% error, you are more cautious. If you don’t know, you trust the system and you do it yourself. “We fantasize a lot, and we have to put our foot down – especially the people who develop AI – and tell the truth where we are.”

Luc Julia takes an image: “Hollywood’s artificial intelligence – that of Terminator or Her – does not exist. It’s not cinema. It’s real applications for real people.”

However, for those who participated in the creation of Siri, Apple’s assistant, we should not denigrate everything. “There are lots of applications that are super interesting in medicine, in transport… We can apply these artificial intelligences in all areas. They save people time. But we just have to explain the limits.”
