It was a missed opportunity. Even the most casual audience could not help but be perplexed by the obvious bias of the moderators. Both candidates for the White House told many falsehoods. But while former President Donald Trump was repeatedly contradicted by the moderators, what Vice President Kamala Harris said was never questioned, even when it was clearly false. That task was left to the former president himself. Trump did his best given the circumstances, but it really was as if there were three of them hitting one opponent. Trump did his best when faced with questions that were overwhelmingly along the lines of “Mr. Trump, do you have any regrets about the terrible things you’ve done?” or “Mrs. Harris, tell us, how bad is Trump?” In doing so, David Muir and Lindsay Davis did exactly what everyone expected, because ABC News is owned by Disney and Disney’s head, Dana Walden, is a longtime friend of Harris and her husband, Doug Hemhoff, so much so that the vice president affectionately attributes to her the “responsibility” for her marriage. Trump was well aware of this state of affairs, so much so that he agreed to have the debate hosted by ABC only because Harris had declared herself against any other television network.
Given what has happened in the past in similar situations, it is very likely that this partisanship will backfire on the vice president’s candidacy, producing at least some new empathy for Trump. Throughout the entire ninety minutes, the real Harris was nowhere to be seen. The vice president needed a flawless performance, one in which she had to avoid falling into those empty phrases devoid of any real meaning that are passed off as her specialty. She did this quite well, even if to that end she did not really answer the questions posed to her and did not offer any specific solutions to any problem. What took the stage last night was a highly theatrical version of the vice president, characterized above all by a series of obviously exaggerated facial expressions, which had the effect of making her appear false and, therefore, weak. Donald Trump was nothing more, and nothing less, than himself, which is to say himself, so much so that at times he stood out for a certain inappropriate irony. However, he won the first half hour of the debate, when it came to the economy, and that was the most important thing, given that most of the working class on the East Coast, who will decide the outcome of the election, go to bed very early and certainly did not follow the entire debate.
Then, as always, her performance went downhill, and she ended up speaking only to her base. In retrospect, there’s little to remember. The two best lines of the night both belong to Trump. The first, when he criticized the vice president’s shifting policies, who was now apparently so close to his positions that he was about to send her one of those red MAGA hats that are the emblem of her movement. The second, when he surprisingly stole and used against her the phrase “I am speaking” with which the vice president had so effectively attacked then-vice president Mike Pence four years ago. Immediately after the debate, the vice president’s staff announced that she was available for a second debate. Now, if Harris had been really bad, her staff certainly wouldn’t have made any allusion to a second debate. However, if Harris had been really good, her staff certainly wouldn’t have made any allusion to another debate. It follows that for the vice president’s staff, her performance was acceptable, but it was not enough to move the needle or further motivate in her favor an electorate that continues to be unable to take her measure. And yet, this is precisely what the vice president needs to win the election.
