The French video game market is holding up well after the end of the health crisis

Driven by travel restrictions during the pandemic, the activity of the video game industry in 2022 did not crack at the end of the crisis.

>> The turnover of the video game market in France reached 5.5 billion euros in 2022, according to the annual report of the Syndicate of Leisure Software Publishers (Sell). Despite a decline of 1.6% over one year, this is a very good performance after two exceptional vintages, as this graph shows. Indeed, the video game market experienced strong enthusiasm during the health crisis, marked by significant restrictions on the movement of the population.

To understand : this figure includes sales of hardware (game media, such as consoles or PCs), sales of software (game software, physical or dematerialized) and accessories (controllers, racing wheels, etc.).

The video game market driven by software sales in 2022

>> Unlike the two previous years, hardware was penalized by supply difficulties. Sales of gaming PCs and consoles fell 10% to €1.55 billion. On the other hand, software revenue rebounded in 2022 and posted growth of 6%, to €2.1 billion. Accessories sales fell 5% to 455 million.

>> By ecosystem, the sector’s turnover in 2022 breaks down as follows:

  • €2.6 billion for consoles, down 6.6% over one year.
  • €1.55 billion for the PC dedicated to video games, +5.8%.
  • €1.4 billion for mobiles (software only), stable over one year.

The best video games in 2022

>> The Sell also lists the best-selling games for each medium. The best-selling console game is Fifa 23. Electronic Arts has sold more than 1.7 million copies in France for a total of 107.3 million euros. It is ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (€58.5m) and Pokémon Legends (€29m).

>> On PC, the number 1 in sales is Call of Duty: modern warfare II. Activision Blizzard sold more than 217,000 copies, for around €16 million. Elden Ring (€6.3m) and Total War: Warhammer III (€2.7m) completed the podium.

>> Finally, on mobile, the paid application that generated the most revenue is Minecraft Pocket Edition, ahead of Football Manager 2022. Stumble Guys dominates the ranking of free apps in terms of number of downloads.

88% of video game players are adults

>> The Sell report also paints a portrait of the players in France. In 2022, there are 37.4 million players, 88% of whom are adults. 7 out of 10 French people have gambled at least occasionally (once a year). 53% of French people are regular video game players (at least once a week), their average age is 38 years old.
