the French startup Lynx faces the tech giants

The startup Lynx markets the Lynx R1, the first mixed reality headset of French origin. A product that intends to stand out among the devices offered by the competition, notably Apple and Meta.

It was last June. Apple took advantage of its WWDC conference to present the Vision Pro, its first mixed reality headset. For its part, Meta responded a few weeks later with the Meta Quest 3. While the American tech giants are investing massively in this area, a French startup, Lynx also offers its mixed reality mask solution: the Lynx R1, available in two models.

These latter embed cameras that replicate reality in screens to allow virtual elements to be added to the real world. A concept close to that of the Apple Vision Pro but which the French company can pride itself on being among the first to have exploited. “Mixed reality is a bet that we have taken since 2017 at Lynx”, underlines Stan Larroque, founder and CEO of Lynx, guest of the special show dedicated to virtual reality from Tech&Co, Monday October 30.

A helmet that offers its own concept

For composer Jean-Michel Jarre, also present in this show, the Lynx mixed reality headset stands out from competing models on a conceptual level. “It brings other features that for me, as a creator, interest me more than the headsets that are on the market for lots of reasons. The Lynx is a concept that has its own identity. What is interesting is that “is to show that there is a possibility of installing a brick of sovereignty in this area. Whether in terms of software and hardware”, explains the musician who chairs the “immersive creation” commission of the National Cinema Center (CNC).

While the Apple Vision Pro will be closed and equipped with a cable, the Lynx stands out by being open on the sides and without a wire. “Many people feel confined and clostrophobic. The Lynx is the only helmet that avoids this problem,” notes Jean-Michel Jarre. The French company does not intend to blush in the face of the American tech giants. On the contrary, Stan Larroque explains that he was reassured regarding the trajectory taken by Lynx following trying Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

“I was reassured by the fact that it doesn’t have much different from our helmet. It’s just very high-end at 4000 euros with more expensive components […] If we had had specifications to make a $4,000 helmet, we probably would have arrived at the same result or something a little different.”
