Are you more of a cicada or an ant? The French are less concerned regarding saving than the average in OECD countries. According to a survey published by the Banque de France, one in three French people would not be able to survive financially for a month if they lost their main source of income. Moreover, it is not just a question of means.

Headphones on and electronic cigarette in hand, Édouard, 29, passes in front of a bank sign without really noticing it. He who works in the public service, saving is a fairly distant concept: “It’s true, it’s not really in my character. I’m more used to earning money and spending it. spend”.

“You have to be able to live every day”

And yet, Édouard receives 4,000 euros every month. But his high lifestyle and inflation on top makes savings secondary: “I think everyone wants to save because everyone wants to live with a mattress. But in reality, you have to be able to live on a daily basis.” Édouard leaves his money in his current account. Like him, more than four out of ten French people earn a good living without putting any money aside.

Sometimes it’s because they already have to repay a big expense. This is the case of Agathe, 44 years old: “We are repaying a property loan and we are drawing on the savings we have made until today”. The lack of long-term plans also plays a role: “If I have a trip, I will replan a savings plan.” Few people save to anticipate their retirement. Only a little more than one in ten French people think regarding it.
