Sleep represents a third of our lives. This figure alone shows the importance of this rest time in our daily lives, and therefore the importance of sleeping well. Some were able to catch up on some sleep this weekend with the time change since we set our watches back an hour, like every year since 1976.
Because we have a lot of late sleep. In fact, the French are sleeping less and less, on average, 6h42 during the week in 2024 compared to 6h57 in 2019, i.e. 15 minutes of sleep lost in just 5 years and an hour to an hour and a half in 50 years.
The reasons are multiple. The stress generated by our anxiety-provoking societies and the increasing crises (war in Ukraine and Israel, environmental crisis) have an impact on the quality of our sleep. One in three French people declare (in the latest survey conducted by the national institute of sleep and vigilance) experiencing sleep disorders for both personal and professional reasons.
But sleeping well is essential, quite simply because sleep is regenerative of many things in our body: it promotes the growth of children and brain maturation too. It literally allows you to recharge your batteries, that is to say, to develop and preserve cognitive abilities. Besides, we have all experienced it: sleeping little or poorly makes us tired, irritable, and can cause difficulty concentrating.
Finally, sleeping helps regulate, among other things, blood sugar levels, and therefore disrupted sleep can lead to weight gain.

What to do to sleep better?
Fortunately, there are tips for sleeping better, starting with regularity in bedtime and wake-up time. And then it is essential to create an environment conducive to falling asleep: darkness, silence, a temperature in the room around 18 degrees and obviously no screen, or in any case impose an airlock of a about hour without a screen before sleeping.
Regular physical activity also affects the quality of sleep, as does a healthy and balanced diet. In the evening, it is best to eat light and long enough before sleeping. Stimulants like coffee should be avoided and even eliminated after 2 p.m.
Unfortunately, for some people, these tips may not be effective. You should know that 15 to 20% of French people suffer from insomnia, including 9% with severe insomnia. In these cases, medical treatment is necessary. There are also centers in Alsace dedicated to sleep disorders, particularly Sainte-Barbe clinic and at CHU in Strasbourgbut also to Haguenau, in Saverne and to Rouffach.
In summary, moving, eating healthily, limiting screen time and adopting a certain regularity in the rhythm of life help you sleep better. Light therapy is also an avenue increasingly explored by doctors. Moreover, the faculty of medicine and the university hospitals of Strasbourg are leading a big investigation on the effects of light therapy and are looking for volunteer insomniacs to participate.
