Le prosecco preferred to champagne. The French are changing their habits due to inflation which has been affecting the agri-food sector for more than a year. With the explosion in prices, champagne currently costs 30 euros per liter on average in supermarkets, reports BFM Business. Volume sales of champagne have plummeted this year. A fall of 20.7% in all French retail circuits, between 1is January and December 3. Unlike other sparkling wines, which experienced a sharp increase in purchases – almost 3% increase.

Consumers are turning to cheaper products. If the liter of champagne increased to 30 euros, the liter of sparkling wine costs 6.46 euros. “Champagne is struggling because it is too expensive for many French people,” explains Dominique Schelcher, CEO of Système U, to BFM Business. Other sparkling wines are on the rise, like Crémant d’Alsace. »

A competitive market

The price of champagne is explained by the cost of its production with a much more complex vinification method than that of prosecco, for example. Aging in oak barrels is also longer. But for customers, the quality/price ratio put forward by producers is less and less obvious.

The balance of power between champagne and sparkling wine has shifted this year. Over the first eleven months, the turnover of champagne in mass distribution fell by 11.4%, while that of sparkling wine increased by 9.6%. Over the whole of 2023, sales could fall to 110 million units, compared to 138.4 million in 2022. A level at the lowest level in years.
