Regarding “Agios Savvas”, Mr. Themistokleous said that, “we are creating an integrated cancer center in Agios Savvas, which will be the first in our country and will be the compass for the rest”.
He also emphasized that “we have a very good treatment of oncology patients. They have access to modern medicines. We can already measure this. Our country is 8th in the European Union”.
As for whether more cancer hospitals are needed, Mr. Themistokleous said that “we have some waiting time for radiation treatments. A very significant effort has been made in recent years and it has decreased either because new radiation therapy machines have come in and because we have given access to the private sector at no cost to patients. Another 7 radiotherapy machines will be added in the coming years. We are creating the Oncology Center in Lamia. We are creating the Oncology Center in Sotiria. These are the 4 radiotherapy machines. There are others that will come into the country so that we get down to very good times. We will surpass other European countries, we will be among the first countries in Europe.”
How do we reduce wait times?
Regarding the changes in waiting times in the emergency rooms, Mr. Themistokleous emphasized: “We will start building changes in this system that exists now, so that in a year or so from today we will reach a very significant improvement.”
He also pointed out that they are currently renovating almost all the emergency rooms in the country’s major hospitals, but this makes the changes difficult.
He explained in more detail: “The first thing that will happen is that we will have some changes in the teams on duty. We will also have 500 ambulances in the country’s hospitals and most of them will be in the big hospitals. There will be a digital system that will allow both the doctors and us to get information so that we can coordinate the emergency room, to move when we have the construction materials, to bigger changes in the emergency room.”
He reminded that an incident in the emergency room may not have a wait at all if it is severe.
In November, the free afternoon surgeries also start
Regarding the afternoon surgeries, he said that “we started with the afternoon surgeries that people pay for. We have a very good result and even better than the goals we have set. 50 hospitals in the country participate and above all the system has been created operationally, so that we can start the free afternoon surgeries. Free afternoon surgeries will hopefully start in November. If it is not in November, only bureaucratic procedures are left. We are ready and will be able to decongest the list. Since we are talking about 30,000-40,000 of our fellow citizens”.
As for the priority given to the free afternoons, Mr. Themistokleous said that, “it will start exactly the opposite of the older incident, it will be operated first. We have a full record. We have a complete picture of what we are waiting for.”
Incentives to doctors for barren areas
“In the coming days we will release the positions for the so-called barren or difficult areas,” said the deputy minister and mentioned the incentives that will be given to the doctors.
“The announcement that would have been issued a year ago and the announcement that we will issue in the next month have nothing to do with each other. Since then, we have the possibility of private work, the possibility of afternoon surgeries. As for the surgeons. Both are related to the doctor’s opportunity to increase his income and not be limited. We have a sixfold increase in some specialties in the money we give. That is, if he received 100 euros a year ago, at the moment he will receive 600 euros and we have independent taxation of emergency services”, he explained.
Finally, Mr. Themistokleous explained in general about the situation and the gaps in the NHS that, “we have the most staff that the National Health System has since 2009 that we have data on. We have problems in certain specialties and in certain areas. The big picture is that we have a very significant increase in staff. And I tell you the figures are 10% in the last four years.”
