Rolling Stone magazine co-founder Jann Wenner was excluded from the board of directors of the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, which commemorates rock and popular music celebrities, after making statements that were considered biased and racist, as reported by Variety magazine the day before yesterday.

The foundation announced in a brief statement – according to Variety – that “Jan Wenner has been removed from the Board of Directors of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

The exclusion of Weiner (77 years old) comes the day after the publication of an interview conducted with him by the New York Times, which sparked widespread criticism.

In response to the newspaper’s question about why there is no mention of any musicians of color, male or female, in his book “The Masters,” which will be published on September 26, and includes interviews with seven artists: Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, John Lennon, Bono, Jerry Garcia, Bruce Springsteen, and Pete Townshend. “None of them expressed themselves in a sufficiently intellectually organized way,” he said of the women.

He added: “This does not mean that they are not creative geniuses, and it also does not mean that they are not eloquent, but try to have an in-depth conversation with Grace Slick or Janis Joplin… Joni (Mitchell) was not a rock and roll philosopher. In my opinion, she did not meet this standard either through her work or through other journalistic conversations she gave. “The people I interviewed were philosophers of rock.”

As for black artists, he replied: “Stevie Wonder is a genius, isn’t he? I think the mistake lies in using a strong term like “teachers.” Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield? “I mean, their conversations were not at that level.”

He continued: “Look at what Pete Townshend, or Jagger, or any of them wrote. “They were writing profound things about a certain generation, a certain spirit and a certain attitude toward rock and roll.”

Weiner admitted in an interview with the New York Times that he was aware that his words would displease some people.

Weiner co-founded Rolling Stone magazine in 1967 and left it in 2019. He also established the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and served as president of the museum until 2020.
