In April, an investigating judge at the Paris court issued an international arrest warrant for Carlos Ghosn, the former CEO of Renault-Nissan, who lives in Lebanon, as part of the investigation into contracts awarded by a subsidiary of the group. a source close to the file told AFP on Tuesday.

The ousted auto tycoon is already the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by an investigating judge in Nanterre in April 2022 as part of investigations into the misuse of corporate assets and organized money laundering linked to the Omani company Suhail Bahwan Automobiles (SBA).

“Carlos Ghosn cannot leave Lebanon, as the Lebanese authorities have forbidden him to leave the country due to the Japanese procedure. He cannot therefore respond to summonses to appear for an indictment in France,” Léon Del Forno and Martin Reynaud, the former director general’s lawyers, told AFP.

In their opinion, “this arrest warrant is neither more nor less than an attempt by the magistrates to continue their investigation, in the absence of the possibility of indicting Carlos Ghosn”.

The investigating judge in Paris issued the arrest warrant in April following Carlos Ghosn failed to appear at a summons to be indicted on May 19, 2022 on corruption and other charges.

This international arrest warrant might be the last act of the judicial investigation opened on July 10, 2019 for corruption, bribing an official of an international public organization, influence peddling, abuse of corporate assets and handling of stolen goods.

After completing the investigations, the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office will make recommendations, following which the investigating judge will decide whether or not to order a trial. Since the arrest warrant is equivalent to an indictment, Carlos Ghosn might be brought before the criminal court.

The suspicions in this case refer to the amount of 900,000 euros paid to Rachida Dati by RNBV, the Dutch subsidiary of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, during the period when Carlos Ghosn was its general director.

Dati received these fees as a lawyer between 2010 and 2012, when he was also a member of the European Parliament. She has been under investigation since July 2021 for “corruption and passive influence peddling by a person holding elective public office.”

In particular, the judiciary is trying to establish whether her income corresponds to specific activities or whether it was a job of convenience that might have hidden lobbying activities in the European Parliament, prohibited for MEPs.
