The formation of the Guayana Esequiba state is moving forward in Parliament

The Special Commission for the Defense of the Essequibo Territory and Territorial Sovereignty of the National Assembly (YEAR 2020), appointed the team that will develop the base documents for the formation of the State of Essequibo.

The team was chaired by the deputy Hermann Escarra and made up of parliamentarians William Fariñas, Ilenia Medina and the advisors Eduardo Escarra, Luz Orsolani y Juan José Mendoza, reported VTV.

Once the text is completed, it is expected to be submitted to the Legislative Branch for consideration.

Parliamentarian Hermann Escarrá indicated that the base documents will be formed as indicated by the Organic Law for the Defense of Essequibo Guayanaof the new state and its constitution. He stated that they will thoroughly review the legal instrument and, on its basis, expand on the details to then present it, in accordance with the provisions of the Law and the so-called consultative referendum of December 3, 2023.

Last April, the Government of Guyana rejected the law that would give rise to the new state. “This attempt by Venezuela to annex more than two-thirds of Guyana’s sovereign territory and make it part of Venezuela constitutes a flagrant violation of the most fundamental principles of international law”the Guyanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

He also warned that “will not tolerate the annexation, seizure or occupation of any part of its sovereign territory”.

The two governments have been increasing the climate of tension over the border dispute, with military exercises by the US Air Force on Guyanese territory, and the recent construction by the Venezuelan Army of a temporary bridge on the border with Essequibo.
