In our nativity scenes, the palm tree is well hidden behind the ox and the donkey, the wise men and the shepherds. It has become a discreet accessory, a decorative element. And yet, this tree plays the leading role in other, lesser-known versions of Christmas Eve. According to several oriental variations of the birth of Jesus, Mary gives birth under a palm tree. In others, the young woman feeds on the fruits of a date palm, before drinking water which is miraculously offered to her by the roots of the tree.
