Mexico City – The Forum of Presidents of Legislative Powers of Central America and the Caribbean (FOPREL) expressed, on Friday in Mexico City, its support and adherence to the proclamation of Rabat as “capital of South-South cooperation”.

This declaration crowned the work of the Parliamentary Dialogue Forum of Senates and equivalent councils from Africa, the Arab world, Latin America and the Caribbean, organized recently in Rabat under the high patronage of HM King Mohammed VI.

Organized by the Chamber of Councillors, this Forum is the first of its kind bringing together the parliamentary institutions of three regional groupings from 32 countries.

For Foprel, the objectives set out in the Rabat Declaration are in line with its action plan relating to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, the establishment of peace, universal health coverage, the guarantee of safe migration and orderly order, the promotion of human rights, transparency in the management of public affairs, economic and social recovery, food security and adaptation to climate change.

Foprel, which Morocco joined as an observer member in 2014, is made up of the speakers of the parliaments of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

This Regional Forum paid tribute to the key role of the Moroccan Parliament in strengthening the relations of friendship and cooperation with the regional legislative body and with the various parliaments of its Member States.

Speaking at the 40th session of Foprel, which has just been held in Mexico City, the Vice-President of the House of Councillors, Ahmed Akhchichine noted the importance of consolidating the South-South interparliamentary partnership, as well as the relevance of Morocco’s diplomatic strategy, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, to support cooperation between southern countries to hasten the development expected by the people.

“The Moroccan Parliament is proud of the relations of cooperation and partnership with Foprel, illustrated by the holding in the Kingdom of the sessions of the Forum in 2016 and 2017”, he indicated in the presence of the vice-president of the Chamber of representatives, Hassan Benomar and Morocco’s ambassador to Mexico, Abdelfettah Lebbar.
