Apart from Panachaiki, who have been absent from Super League 1 for more than 20 years, there are many others still struggling in the smaller leagues, who have returned to the local and cannot raise their heads. Let’s see some of them:
AEL: One of the most successful provincial teams. He has won a championship and two Greek cups with his last participation in SL1 in the 2020-21 season. He did not manage to return this year either.
DRAMA GLORY: For the first time in its history, the historical team was relegated to the local level, one game before the end of the 3rd National Championship. That is, following 106 years! The coach was the former ace of Olympiakos, Ierocles Stoltidis. The last time he participated in the first national team was the 2011-2012 season.
VERIA: Veria was also relegated to the local, which faced many problems, although two years ago it came very close to promotion to Super League 1.
APOLLON OF SMYRNIS: We put him as an exception, as he is not a provincial team and is heading to the local. There are two games left before the end of the championship in the 4th Group of the 3rd National Team and the historic team is -4 from the line. Last time in SL1 was the 2021-22 season.
KASTORIA: Kastoria fell once more in the local. They were the first provincial team to win the Greek Cup (1980), while for the last time they participated in the First National League in the period 1996-97.
OLYMPIAKOS VOLOS: He emerged as the champion of EPS Thessaly and is preparing for the play-offs where he will claim promotion to the 3rd National League. Last participation in the A’ National team in the season 2010-11.
HERCULES: An inconvenience in itself lately. With VAT changes, it reached the 3rd local Division, now it competes in the Super League 2 play-outs.
From Iraklis it became AEP Iraklis 1908, AS Iraklis 2015, AS Iraklis Ampelokipon and from 2020 until today POT Iraklis. Last time in SL1 in 2016-2017 season.
Kalamata: From the First National team in 2000-01, it reached the local level in the 2016-2017 season, while for the last five years it remains in SL2, despite the large amount of money that has been spent.
YOU GO GIANNINA: After consecutive appearances in SL1 from 2011-2012 (with the exception of 2019-2020), PAS was relegated to SL2 this year and seems to be struggling to find investors to take over PAE.
PIERRICUS: Never managed to climb back into SL1 following 1993 with the team this year renewing their presence in the 3rd National Championship.
CORINTH: He’s had the upper hand all year for promotion to SL2, but it looks like he’ll lose it to Panargeiakos. Last time in SL1 in 1992-93 and then began the decline that reached the local.
TRIKALA: Since the last participation in the First National team, in the period 1999-00, a lot has happened. The team played in local, 3rd, 4th National, disbanded, played for 7 years (2015-2022) in Super League 2 and now fighting to stay in 3rd National.
KAVALA: Struggled but bounced back in Super League 2 and has higher aspirations. Last season in the A’ National team in the period 2010-2011.
