A controversial appointment. The Cameroonian Football Federation (Fécafoot) denounced, Wednesday April 3, the “unilateral” decision taken the day before by the government to appoint the Belgian Marc Brys coach of the men’s national team to succeed Rigobert Song.

“The Cameroonian Football Federation learned, at the same time as all Cameroonians, of the appointment to positions of responsibility within the National Senior Men’s Football Selection,” Fécafoot is indignant, evoking its “great surprise” , in a press release published on his Facebook page.

According to the federation, this appointment opposes the presidential decree “on the organization and operation of national football selections”, which specifies that the sporting management of selections falls within the competence of Fécafoot.

The federation assures “that it will communicate without delay on the reaction it intends to have”. Contacted by AFP, however, she did not add more details.

Appointed Tuesday in a press release from the Minister of Sports, the new coach, Marc Brys, 61, succeeds Rigobert Song whose contract ended at the end of February and was not renewed by the president of the Indomitable Lions, Samuel Eto’ o.

This is the third Belgian technician to take charge of the Cameroonian selection. The previous one was Hugo Broos, who led her to the African Cup title in 2017.

Cameroon remains eliminated from the round of 16 of the last CAN in January, beaten by Nigeria 2-0. The new coach will have the main mission of qualifying the Lions for the next edition in 2025 and for the 2026 World Cup.
