As part of the annual commercial negotiations currently underway between distributors and agri-food manufacturers, the FNSEA opposed any deflationary pressure on agricultural raw materials.

The FNSEA, the majority agricultural union, warned on Wednesday January 10 that annual commercial negotiations between supermarkets and the agri-food industry should not be to the detriment of the farmers who supply the raw materials for the products.

“We need to ensure that agricultural raw materials are not attacked,” declared FNSEA president Arnaud Rousseau during a press conference. Commercial negotiations between large retailers and their major suppliers, which will determine the price of a large part of the products sold in supermarkets, must end on January 31.

Since Emmanuel Macron’s first election in 2017, several laws have been passed to introduce a form of “sanctuaryization” of the price paid to agricultural producers, so that they do not suffer from bargaining between distributors and their suppliers, and can cover their production costs.

“A red line”

“What matters for us is that there is no deflationary pressure on agricultural raw materials. (…) It is a red line on which we will be extremely vigilant,” insisted Arnaud Rousseau .

The president of the first French agricultural union spoke of a “real concern on farms” in the face of “the drop in volumes” produced, “the reversal of prices, the increase in costs”.

At a time when manufacturers “generally” want to sell their products “around 3 to 6%” more expensive, when their customers are, on the contrary, demanding reductions of the same magnitude, the FNSEA would be satisfied with a low increase or even stable prices, explained Arnaud Rousseau. According to him, “this would ensure that the raw material is not attacked.”
