The flu still present in France despite its decline

While influenza viruses disappeared from some regions last week, they are still actively circulating in others.

The flu epidemic continues to decline in France but this decline is slowing down and most of the metropolis remains affected, the public health agency summarized on Wednesday. The past week has seen a “continued decline in influenza indicators but at a slower rate“only at the very beginning of the year, according to a weekly report from Public Health France.

“Signs of calm”

The seasonal flu epidemic started early this season in France, and added to a bronchiolitis outbreak particularly intense in babies, as well as a covid lazy. From now on, the influenza epidemic is showing signs of calm: it seems able to end soon in several regions – Brittany, Hauts-de-France, Normandy, Reunion and Mayotte – which have gone into phase “post-epidemic” last week. But most of the French metropolis and overseas regions remain in the epidemic phase in a context of “still active circulation of influenza viruses».

Public Health France calls, as with each assessment, for good respect for barrier gestures, noting that the flu is showing marked severity this season, in particular among 15 to 64 year olds.

As for bronchiolitis, in decline since the end of 2022, it continues to decline over most of the territory, the epidemic having ended in Brittany, Guyana and, for two weeks, in the Paris region. However, some metropolitan regions such as Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, as well as Mayotte are still affected.
